In her last juniors match, Alizé Cornet won the French Open girl’s singles title today. She becomes the first French girl to win her home Grand Slam since Virginie Razzano, back in 2000.
Second seed Cornet overcame Mariana Duque Marino, who hails from the Colombian capital of Bogota, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 to win the title. Duque Marino had beaten world number one Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in her semi-final 7-6, 5-7, 7-5.
Cornet, who was knocked out by Venus Williams in the first round of the women’s singles, also had a tough semi, finally beating Ksenia Milecontreaya 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Other current stars on the women’s tour to have won the juniors title here include Amelie Mauresmo and Justine Henin, who won in 1996 and 1997 respectively. Already ranked 118 in the world, Cornet will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of those illustrious predecessors, as well as last year’s winners Agnieszka Radwanska, now 18 years of age and 38th in the world.
