Sunday 3 June in numbers

Sunday, June 3, 2007
By Christian Lacaze

3
The three fastest servers here at the French Open are…Croatian I hear you cry? No, Spanish! David Ferrer leads on 244 km/h, followed by Tommy Robredo on 238 km/h, and Oscar Hernandez on 235 km/h.

7
The number of consecutive games won straight by Lucie Safarova in her last sixteen loss to Anna Chakvetadze. After losing the first set 4-6, Safarova raced through the next 6-0, went one 1-0 up in the second….before losing six of the next seven to lose the final set 6-2.

9
The incredibly small number of unforced errors made by Guillermo Canas in his 6-0, 6-4, 6-2 win over Juan Monaco.

14
The age of the youngest player in the juniors. France’s Kristina Mladenovic is the youngest player competing in this year’s event.

35
In beating Michael Youzhny 7-6, 6-4, 6-4, Roger Federer won his 35th consecutive set in a Grand Slam today, beating the record previously held by John McEnroe (between the 1st round of Wimbledon 1984 and the US Open of the same year). The last player to take a set off the Swiss was Andy Roddick in the final of the 2006 US Open (won by Federer 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1).

100
Roger Federer won the 100th match on clay of his career on Sunday. The 103rd could go down in history…

1993
For the first time in 14 years, seven of the top eight seeded women have booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the French Open. Fifth seed Amelie Mauresmo is the only one missing, which is a shame for the home crowd, and the statisticians who would have liked a repeat of 1993, when all eight seeds made it!

2
The number of match points saved by Maria Sharapova against Patty Schnyder in her 3-6, 6-4, 9-7 win. At 5-4 and then 7-6 down, the Russian was one point away from a premature exit from the tournament, but she pulled herself out of the fire in typically gutsy fashion. Russia’s Anastasia Myskina and Belgium’s Justine Henin are the only champions in the Open era to have won Roland Garros after saving a match point. They both pulled off their rescue act in the fourth round too. Could that be a good omen for Maria?
