Sunday, May 27, 2007
By Christian Lacaze

5

The number of games conceded by Marat Safin on Philippe Chatrier Court. The Russian raced through his match against Spain’s Fernando Vicente 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 in 1 hour 24 minutes. The player ranked 133 in the world was helpless to prevent the No.22 seed recording his fastest win at The French in nine appearances. A semi-finalist back in 2002, Safin will take heart from securing his spot in the second round so quickly. He now faces Janko Tipsarevic, who won his all-Serbian match-up with Dusan Vemic.

8

The number of consecutive games won by Tamira Paszek to brush aside Japan’s Aiko Nakamura. From 4-4 in the first set, the Austrian won seven games in a row before a rain break of nearly six hours made her wait. On the players’ return, Paszek won the eighth game to love and clinched the match 6-4, 6-0.

64

The number of matches planned for Monday – weather permitting. Only 7 of the 24 matches were completed on Sunday’s opening day of the 2007 French Open.

59

At the grand old age of 34, Fabrice Santoro will be appearing in his 35th consecutive Grand Slam at this year’s French Open, bringing his career total to 59 appearances. The Frenchman has Andre Agassi’s record of 61 Grand Slams firmly in his sights. All being well, he should equal the legendary American’s total at US Open. This will be his 18th appearance at the French Open, where he reached the last sixteen in 1991 and 2001. At this rate, he might just reach the same stage in 2011!

25

The number of unforced errors made by eighth seed Serena Williams in the first set of her match against Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova. The former world number one conceded that set before taking charge to run out a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 winner in 2hrs 12mins.
